Sebaceous Adenitis (SA) is a hereditary skin disease in which the sebaceous glands become inflamed, often leading to progressive loss of hair. Maltese are prone to a variety of skin problems, including sebaceous adenitis. A parent of a SA dog may or may not show clinical symptoms, being what is known as subclinically affected, meaning that some inflammation may exist but has not progressed to the destruction of the glands and the subsequent loss of hair. (65, 66) Sebaceous adenitis can be somewhat breed specific, notably affecting standard poodles, miniature poodles, (67)(68)(69) and beagles.
